MLA Format Template — MLA writing format is a writing style that is very often used in academic and professional writing. Following are writing rules that you should keep in mind when writing in MLA format.

Cover Pages

Do not create a cover page unless you are asked to. According to the standard MLA formatting rules, a cover page, or separate title page, is not part of the text and should generally not be used. This rule makes lecturers sometimes ask their students to make cover pages for an MLA format template, especially for long writing. There are rules that define what information should be on the cover page in that case.

Center the title. Your title should be centered and one-third the size of the paper from the top. Use an informative and creative title. Use a colon to separate the title and subtitle. Sub-headings are written on the same line as the title. Capitalize the first letter of each word, except for conjunctions. Do not use capital letters for words like “and”, “at”, “by”, and the like.

Type in your full name for your MLA format template. Put your name in the center of the paper and don’t forget to add a “by” before your name. Type “by”, press “Enter”, and type your name on the line after. Type your name starting with the first name and ending with the last name.

End with the name of the class, the name of the lecturer and the date of collection. Type in your class and related information. Type the name of the lecturer on the line after it. Type the date of submission on the last line with the format of the month, date, and year.

General MLA Format

Set page margins to 1 inch (2 1/2 cm). This figure applies to the top, bottom, left, and right margins. In most word processing programs, you can change the margins by going to the settings, page layout, under the menu file. Click “Margins” and set the margins according to the MLA format template.

Set the distance to Double-space. Starting from the first page, your writing should be double-space. Even so, you don’t need to add spacing between paragraphs. In most word processing programs, you can change the spacing through the “Page Layout” setting on the menu file. Search for “Line Spacing” and select “2.0”.

Use a font size 12. The Type font preferred in MLA format template is Times New Roman with a size of 12. If you want to use a font other than Times New Roman, choose a font that is simple, easy to read, and not too big.

Create a running header. The running header will appear on every page at the same place. Use this feature to include your last name and page number at the top right of the page. Open “Header and Footer” in the menu view of your word processor. Type in your last name and press the button number on the setting box to enter the page number automatically.

Compiling the First Page

Type the page header at the top left. If you don’t use a cover page, the header will contain the same information as the cover page. Type your name, lecturer name, course name, and date of submission for the MLA format template. Type your name starting with the first name and ending with the last name. Type the title and name of your professor on the next line. Type the class and subject number on the next line. Type the date of submission on the last line with the format of the month, date, and year.

Type a title in the middle of the page. Type this section one line below the date. Don’t make your title larger, italicized, underlined, or bold. Use an informative and creative title. Use a colon to separate headings and subtitles. Sub-headings are written on the same line as the title. Except for conjunctions, capitalize the first letter of each word. Do not use capital letters for words like “and”, “at”, “by”, and the like.

Body of Writing

Have the beginning of each paragraph indented 1/2 inch (1.25 cm). Use the key tab to indent the beginning of the paragraph of the MLA format template. You don’t need to increase the spacing between paragraphs, just indent the beginning of each paragraph.

Separate the sections of your writing using section headers in appropriate places. When working on a long piece of writing, your professor may ask you to separate your writing into sections. It is recommended that section heads in MLA style script be numbered with Arabic numbers and dots. Add one space before you write the header. Use capital letters to write the first letter of each word. Heads of sections are generally written in the center of the page and have separate lines.

Give a number to each table and figure that you insert in your MLA format template. Center the image on the page and add the number, label, and source information. Use “Pictures, 1” “Picture 2,” and so on for pictures and photos. Use “Table 1,” “Table 2,” and so on for tables and graphs. Name the image with a short description such as “cartoon” or “statistical table”. Include the image provider name, source, publication date, and page number. All of this information must be listed on the same line under the image.

Citing Someone Else’s Writing

Use brackets to indicate the owner of the quote you are using. You must cite the owner of the material you are using, including direct, indirect, or a summary in your writing in brackets after the quotation. If available, include the author’s last name and the page number of the citation you used. If the citation you are using comes online and does not have a page number, simply include the author’s name. If you can’t find the author’s name, include a brief summary of the title of the source of the citation you used.

Compose an “in sentence” quote. Generally speaking, quotes are inserted “in the sentence”, which means you don’t need to use a special format and the quote can be treated as part of the sentence. Make the sentence you quote a part of the sentence you type. Never write a “hanging quote,” that is, a quote that is written directly without stating the reason for the quote. After the final quotation marks, enclose the source in parentheses, and use a comma or period after it at the MLA format template.

Create block quotes. Quotations that are longer than three lines must be separated from the text and written in blocks. Press “Enter” to create a new line before you write the quote. Each line of the quote should be indented 1 inch. You don’t need to use quotation marks to start or end a quote, just enclose the source in parentheses.
